Biography
After graduation from Cameron University, with a degree in Ag Education and Animal Science, Don Armes spent 13 years as an Ag teacher. During the last year of his teaching career in Lawton, Don began doing agriculture reports for KLAW Radio in Lawton, OK. He went full-time into the Ag broadcasting field in the summer of 1997.
In the summer of 1998, Don started working for KSWO Television, Lawton, Oklahoma, as an Ag reporter for Channel 7. For two consecutive years, he was voted Favorite TV Personality and Favorite Auctioneer by the Lawton Constitution readers.
In the 2002 elections, Don was elected as Representative for Oklahoma House District 63, covering a large portion of Comanche County and all of Tillman County. Going into his second legislative term, in 2005, Don was designated Majority Whip, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Environmental & Natural Resources, and member of the Agriculture & Rural Development Committee, the Veterans & Military Affairs Committee, and the County & Municipal Government Committee.
Rep. Armes is currently the Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee and members on both the Natural Resources & Regulatory Services Committee and the Veterans & Military Affairs Committee. Representative Armes is also the Director of the House Page Program and a Presiding Officer for the House of Representatives.
Don has served as a spokesman in TV commercials for Billingsley Ford for the Lawton, Duncan and Ardmore dealership, and does occasional ads for other business. He has been a well sought after spokesman.
In 1985 Don went to Auctioneer school in Bryan, Texas, instructed by legendary auctioneer Walter Britton. He has been involved in the auction business for over twenty years and, as Armes Auction Services, conducts Real Estate, Farm Equipment, Antique and Business Liquidation Auctions. Don services numerous benefit auctions for various groups like The American Heart Association, The Diamond Hats, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and many others.
Don is a member of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association and is an Advisory Director for the organization. In July of 2001, he received the Media Appreciation Award from the OCA for his handling of the issues regarding B.S.E. and the Foot in Mouth crisis. In the year 2006 Armes received Legislative Appreciation Award from OCA as well as the Meritorious Service Award from the Oklahoma Farm Bureau. In 2007 he received the Honorary American Degree from the National FFA Association.
He currently lives on the family farm near Faxon, OK awheat and cattle operation, with his wife Dede and daughter Kelsey. His oldest daughter Katy is a student at OSU. He works in the commercial real estate business with Johnny Owens Commercial properties and conducts auctions through Armes auction service.
