How Much Did Ya Get?

Unless you have been on the East Coast where they are whining about what we call “normal heat”, then you know that here in good ole’ Oklahoma, we have had an unusually wet summer. Probably the most common question is “how much did ya get?” If you are a good rural Oklahoman worth your salt, you know how to answer. The proper answer is “I dumped out” however many inches. You never say “we received” three inches. It is always “I dumped out.” If you are gonna talk rain, you gotta learn how to talk rain right. When you report to your neighbors at the co-op or the coffee shop how much you dumped out, that means you dumped it out so that you could make room for more. You gotta learn the language if you are gonna roll with us down here. It is just like when granny goes to the beauty shop. She goes for one reason: to get her hair fixed. To somebody from New York, they would wonder if her hair had been broken. So, the rain talk looks like it is gonna be an ongoing process. Maybe by the time this article hits the newspaper, the system will have moved out. I can tell ya that at the Armes’ place, by the time it ends, we will have “dumped out” over five inches this summer.

In this arid corner, rain always gives us hope because we know full well what not enough rain looks like. I will take a wet summer over a dry summer any day. It is hard not to complain because after all, we are good at that. It has been wet and hard to get things done but, overall, I think everyone would agree that a wet summer is a blessing in many ways. The promise of green grass and plenty of pond water in August is hard to not be happy about. So, let er’ rain. We will sharpen the mower blades back up and get the swather and hay baler ready and look forward to a good grass hay season and quite possibly, more cotton than this country has seen in years.

The next major political date on the radar screen is the primary elections on July 27th. That will be on us before we know it. It is going to be an interesting year and you will be inundated with information from political candidates. I would suggest thorough study of those who ask for your vote. I recommend if you do not know the candidates, find out all you can and then get out there and vote! It is our duty as citizens and I encourage you to take part in that basic fundamental part of the process. Many people think, incorrectly, that their vote does not count but, as the saying goes, “the world is ruled by those who show up”. So, study, and by all means, show up. I will be happy to help any of you who need information. I will be honest with ya and I will tell ya what I know and I won’t pull punches. I will be glad to visit with anyone. I will try my best to help you through all the political noise and maybe, help you see it from an insider’s perspective and someone who knows the players, at least on the state level. And again, we will try to do that in a straightforward, honest way. So, study up and get ready because our state’s future is on the line and you have a voice.

And here’s a little something to think about as you go down the road:
